Movie Check- The Old Ways

Movie title: The Old Ways

Genre: Drama, Horror, Fantasy

Initial release: August 21, 2021 (Philippines)

Where to watch: Netflix

I was not planning to write a review for this movie.

Before I continue, this is what this movie is about:

Deep in the Veracruz jungles, Mexican American journalist Cristina Lopez (Brigitte Kali Canales) is held captive by a mysterious bruja, or witch doctor who is convinced she’s possessed by a demon. Ultimately her fight for survival becomes one for her soul.

The Story

This has a straightforward story. It has a simple premise and I think it was executed well. Although there are a couple of scenes that are a bit confusing to me. One example is when Cristina asked her cousin Miranda (Andrea Cortes) to help her record and she even gave a small tour of the place. That was weird.

While watching this, I was really curious about what the bruja Luz (Julia Vera) would do next to exorcise that demon inside Cristina. For me, those were the entertaining parts.

The ending was fine and a bit humorous. I didn’t really expect it but it was entertaining nonetheless.

The Characters/ Actors

I actually like every actor in this movie. They managed to make me feel invested in what is happening from beginning to end.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this is a decent movie. The only thing is, this is tagged as horror but it wasn’t scary at all. There are some gory parts but the scare is not enough for me. I also liked that this showed two kinds of demons; the supernatural one and Cristina’s inner demons.

What about you? What do you think of this movie?

I was originally planning to watch then review the movie Notting Hill, but after watching it for almost an hour, I was bored. Then, I remembered that I watched this horror movie with le fiance the other day. And so, here we are.

Thank you so much for reading.

I’ll talk to you again this Saturday for a book review!
