Anime Chat-Komi Can’t Communicate

Anime: Komi Can’t Communicate Season 1

Genre: Coming-of-age, Romantic comedy, Slice of life

Original Run: October 7, 2021 – present

Where to watch: Netflix

In the midst of, probably, one of the most stressful weeks in my life, I decided to finally go ahead and watch this anime.

Before I continue, this is what this anime is about:

On her first day attending the elite Itan Private High School, Shouko Komi immediately receives an overwhelming surge in popularity due to the unprecedented stoic beauty and refined elegance her classmates perceive her to possess. However, only Hitohito Tadano, an exceedingly average schoolboy who sits next to her, discovers that behind her bishōjo appearance, Komi has a severe communication disorder. Subsequently, Tadano resolves to help Komi reach her goal of 100 friends.

The Story

I actually like the humorous take that this anime did despite the seriousness of Komi’s condition. Each episode shows us how Komi tries her best to do something out of her comfort zone. That, combined with the craziness of her classmates, made each episode an entertaining watch.

I also appreciate the anime’s take on the idea that even the most popular, seemingly perfect, girl in school can also have her flaw. No one is perfect, and that’s ok.

Other than the whole thing about Komi, this is like any other slice of life, coming-of-age anime.

The Characters

The first time I saw Komi and Tadano, I honestly didn’t see the appeal. This is one of the reasons why I didn’t jump to watching this anime as soon as it was suggested to me by Netflix. The art style didn’t attract me enough. But, over time, it grew on me and I ended up focusing on the story instead.

I really liked Komi and Tadano’s dynamics. And they are cute together.

The other secondary characters are too cliche though, although I think it was intentional. It was really entertaining to see how each of those different personalities would react to Komi’s case and vice versa.

The only character I didn’t quite like was Nakanaka, the token chuunibyou. I think in regards to this character type, Rikka Takanashi from the anime Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions had already exhausted my patience. I am just not a fan of the whole chuunibyou thing.

The Art

As I mentioned, I wasn’t that into the art style at first. After a couple of episodes, I started to appreciate it. The animation is smooth and I really like the chibi scenes. Although, I am biased since I personally enjoy drawing chibi versions of my favorite anime characters.

Yes, I stayed for that chibi, Neko Komi.

Other than that, I don’t really have much to say since, sadly, I am having eye problems as of late. Everything is blurry for me. I watched this entire anime in blurred mode. I will update this section once I managed to grab some prescription glasses and rewatch the anime.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I enjoyed watching this anime. Even le fiance found it quite charming and funny. I am now looking forward to watching season 2, which is coming on April 7,2022 according to the website Game Revolution.

If you are looking for something a bit funny and entertaining, give this one a watch.

I actually decided to watch this in English Dub instead of the usual Japanese Audio English Sub. I tried but I just ended up with a bad headache after trying to read those subs. I liked the voices they used. I think they fit each of the characters perfectly. Except for that country girl named Nokoko. I really find her charming but I am not a fan of her English voice. Just some personal preference though.

Well, there you go! Thank you so much for reading. If you’ve already watched this anime, let me know your thoughts!

I’ll talk to you again this weekend for a book review. Until then, keep safe guys!
